A day in the Life of Quasim

I am going to get the ball rolling with posting some work. This is something I shot while in Srinagar last year. The story revolves around Quasim, a paper Mache' artist who has been working in the trade since he was only 7 years old. Now at 55, he has a house full of children who are all amongst other things working with paper mache'.

The truth is that despite the presence of fair price NGO's these artists are heavily exploited, they spend all day every day working with finesse and ease and completing hundreds of paper mache' products. Yet, they only see a few hundred rupees for their efforts.

This is an edit of 36 or so images. Some of them are a little unnecessary and will be removed. I am also working on a multi-media version of this story in black&white.

Do check it out and send me your feedback.

Beautiful imagery..nice light, composition..and of course, a great story..wondering how brilliant the images would have looked if it were a long term project..how much time did ya spend there? Also, i think it would have been great if you a had more structured photo story to elaborate your idea. For eg, did you want to focus on his skill sets? if so, are those bangles etc the best of his work? His poor household is full of children.. what about some pics of his kids? hey... just writing something that just popped into my head when i saw ur pics...looking forward to more ..

Yeah, its pretty apparent that I was just passing through. Got to be with him for only 2 half day sessions. Definitely need to go back and do a real day in the life story that starts with him waking up. As i said, been racking my head on how to edit it down to fewer - and more concise - just cant figure it out.

Help! Anyone?

Hi, Varun good stuff dude. For me the story of Quasim is little vague. But I guess that's becoz you weren't able to spend that much time in there. See for me editing doesn't mean removing images. It means more than that. For example when you are looking at multimedia or any form of presentation represented by images to convey a story, U need to have pictures complementing each other. I guess to be simple, I do multimedia documentary and many times when I show to my photographer friends, they don't comprehend it as a movie or a presentation. They point out single images that they really like. I hope you understand what I really want to tell you. Look at your images from a story point of view and not on the basis of single picture. For example I keep my image format horizontal, The treatment to the images in post production are similar. The images are made b/w or color depending on the aesthetics of the story. For instance I had treated my images warmer in post production, because it suited the story done in Purulia west bengal. The story was basically dealing with agriculture and lifestyle of farmers. I guess if you are thinking about making your images b/w, you have to be careful of not taking away the colors that forms the basis of this story. There are many kinds of multimedia; what kind you are thinking about?
Are you going to make it a sort of musical presentaion or
A multimedia documentary consisting of narration, ambient sound and a background note.
I hope I was humble enough in my opinion and best of luck with your work. Keep in touch. God bless
